Perpetual Next (OMR Moerdijk) about the collab with Smicon

At Perpetual Next, they process food waste from restaurants and supermarkets on a daily basis. They convert these residual flows, such as expired products, into biogas. Their mission is clear: extract value from waste and contribute to a circular economy. “A key part of our success is Smicon’s technology, which helps us achieve our goals,” says Henry van Benten, former owner of OMR Moerdijk.

“Our collaboration with Smicon goes back to 1984, when we first came into contact with them through Tonnie, the owner. My father, a pig farmer at the time, needed pig slats and Smicon delivered them in good faith.” This solid start has developed into a long-term relationship characterized by trust, innovation and growth. Since then, they have grown together with Smicon and have tested and implemented numerous innovations at OMR Moerdijk.

“One of the biggest breakthroughs in our collaboration was the development of the SP600, an advanced screw press for reducing the residual flow that was tested at our premises.” The idea came about through frequent brainstorming with Tonnie, and thanks to the joint innovation, OMR can now reduce 60 tons of residual flow to just 20 tons every day. We do this by separating, unpacking, pressing, filtering and drying the residual flows. The result? A clean plastic flow that can be reused, for example to produce oil.

“Thanks to Smicon's technology, we have not only improved our efficiency, but also strengthened our sustainability goals. For example, we supply residual heat to our neighbors in the port of Moerdijk, and soon we will even supply green gas that can be connected directly to the energy grid.” This is a new step for the company and a crucial development in their quest for a more sustainable future.

“What makes Smicon special for us is not only their innovative technology, but also their personal approach. For example, I still remember well that when the first Smicon machine was exported to China, they came to us for reference. The icing on the cake was that I was allowed to go to China to share our experience with Smicon on the spot.”

Over the years, OMR Moerdijk has achieved a lot. In 2012 and recently in 2023, they were chosen as 'Company of the Year' from no less than 400 companies, with a strong focus on sustainability. Although they are proud of this, they remain down-to-earth and stick to their core values: sustainability, innovation and reliability must go hand in hand with profitability in order to continue growing.

Thanks to Henry van Benten for sharing his experience with Smicon. We look forward to what the future has in store for us!
