partner network Smicon australia Mecbio

Smicon has teamed up with MECBIO, a leading full-service provider in organic waste recovery and recycling in Australia. Together, we are addressing Australia’s growing food waste challenges by offering innovative, sustainable solutions to various sectors.

MECBIO’s expertise includes the design and construction of turn-key facilities such as in-vessel composting, anaerobic digestion, air treatment, and now also food depackaging. This aligns perfectly with Smicon’s mission to transform food waste into valuable resources. Through this partnership, we provide machinery that processes both packed and unpacked foodstuffs and other organic waste, helping reduce environmental impact. Besides this, MECBIO also offers solutions for the food production industry, such as our SMIDE shredders to cut potatoes, fruit and vegetables and our SMIMO grinders for pulverizing residual streams.

MECBIO’s impressive client list includes waste councils and companies such as Soilco, SACYR, Western Composting, Repurpose It, and more. These organizations are already making strides in waste recovery, and through this partnership, they can enhance their efforts with Smicon's cutting-edge technology.

Australia’s Food Waste Challenge

Although Australia’s food systems are highly developed and produce large volumes of nutritious food, food waste is estimated to cost the Australian economy $20 billion each year.  Australia generates around 7.6 million tonnes of food waste annually, contributing 3% of the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions. In response, Australia’s National Food Waste Strategy is aiming to halve food waste by 2030, which has sparked demand for efficient waste management solutions. The strategy seeks to leverage these efforts, and identifies four areas where improvements can be made – policy support, business improvements, market development, and behavior change.*

Dean Dowie, CEO of MECBIO, shares his excitement about the collaboration: “We’re excited to work with Smicon, a company that shares our vision for sustainability and innovation. Together, we can offer even more efficient solutions to clients.”

Driving Innovation in Waste Management

The future of food waste recycling in Australia looks bright as advancements in recycling technologies, government support, and public awareness grow. Our partnership will help waste councils and companies implement state-of-the-art food waste recycling systems, ultimately contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable environment.

Joep from Smicon adds, “By joining forces with MECBIO, we’re continuing our mission to provide sustainable food waste recycling solutions globally. We’re eager to support both new and existing customers in Australia and New Zealand with our latest technology, thanks to MECBIO’s expertise.”

Smicon and MECBIO are working together to build a more sustainable future by advancing food waste recycling and supporting the circular economy.
